Hey all! I just wanted to address some of the criticisms and concerns we got from the community after the build jam concluded.
First of all, the event was flawed. A tournament bracket wasn't appropriate for this kind of competition, as evident from the events from the stream. The intention for the event was to host a live voting to make the voting process more engaging and more watchable in a streamed format, and a tournament bracket was the first idea to make that happen.
The reason this was a poor decision, is that a tournament bracket only really lends itself to finding a 1st place, not exactly a 2nd or 3rd, as well as other factors like technical issues while live and human error. A seeded bracket would have introduced bias from the referees, and an unseeded bracket would have introduced unfortunate matchups that eliminated potentially winning builds early.
After some consideration, we have elected to do a re-vote using the game-jam voting process to address the issues with the tournament bracket. However, as it is still community voting, it is still vulnerable to a group of players choosing to vote in ways not based on the intended criteria. Generally we do not consider this an issue, as we know the community takes the voting and the integrity of the competition seriously. However, in this event, that was not the case. It would be damaging to the long-term health of events if potential participants see that any outcome can be changed if people try to sabotage the event; that being said, we trust that this event was an anomaly and that the community will maintain competitive integrity moving forward.
We want to acknowledge the incredible effort that you all put into your builds, and we hope that this re-vote will better recognize those efforts. Thank you for being continually interested in events, and we look forward to delivering a better experience in the next one.
