Why?
  • being support requires problem solving
  • it requires patience
  • good temper
  • and amicablity
advantages of mock sessions:
+ gives a first glance at being support (patience and temper)
+ fast to do (saves everyone's time)
+ gets you problem solving skills
+ displays amicability
- hard to manage and coordinate on an time for the session

advantages of plot apps:
+ shows the diversity of the player's coding skills
+ showcases patience
~ showcases creativity (useless)
~ partialy show problem solving
- doesn't show temper
- doesn't show amicability

any constructive arguments in favor of plot apps / mock sessions would be appriciated

i'm not really adding to the conversation here but the way you had these points sound like they are on a resume. it's a volunteer position that isn't too hard to get. you just have to be respected by the community (not toxic) and be a semi-good coder.

yes but the time it takes to create a new plot, get ideas, find how to implement them, take time to code it, so that you don't have a taste of how sessions work and retire 2 months later?

whats the problem with people retiring 2 months later? they don't wanna be a support anymore, so they don't.

your cons: of plot apps
- doesn't show temper
- doesn't show amicability
everybody gets mad at coding. you need to be able to problem solve in order to fix bugs quickly in a session. you also seem to think support sessions are brutal fights to the death between supporter and supportee. they help with their code and they go out. if it's difficult, sure they might wrap their head around it, but unless it's either super super long or an annoying supportee anger isn't really anything to worry about. and they do keep logs of sessions, and if the supportee really feels like that the supporter mistreated them, they can complain.

oh no not at all, what i think is that the skill to create is not the same as the on to fix/solve problems

Mock sessions are a nice idea, but it kinda sucks that you are only testing a small range of skills. In a plot app, most accepted plots usually have a wide variety of techniques and samples. Even if one were to create a precise mock session test to survey the skills across the board, it would be hard to create, and if it were not to be different each time, the optimal method, then it would be easy to, in a way, cheat the test.

Cool idea though, just show less bias in the pros and cons. I kinda doubt people would cheat in mock sessions.

You gotta realise, for JrHelper those first sessions you do are your 'mock' sessions. If you do well in them, you're able to progress to Helper. If not, then you get demoted.

Also it seems you're suggesting that a mock session would outright replace the application plot, meaning assumedly the Expert team (not many people) would have to give mock sessions to anybody who asked for one, that's a lot of extra sessions.

You might suggest having some sort of barrier to entry to help filter out players before we do a mock session, & there you go, that's the point of the application plot. Its a way of gauging a player without being too taxing on the Expert team / the admin who checks the code out's part, and it can be done on their own time.

So you are suggesting a new sort of role like a JrJrHelper that anyone can get, as long as they fit the few requirements that you need to apply? If this is the case then being mean (for lack of a better way to put it) to the supportee would most likely remove all chances of becoming Jr for a while, or maybe you mean a mock session would be with an already support member (most likely an expert), in this case, like you said it would be hard to find a time, but also there would need to be multiple sessions in order to make sure the applier is willing to commit to something.
